2. Self-Test Function: The battery contains a built-in smart chip that works with the AED controller to periodically and automatically perform self-tests. This function checks the battery charge level, internal resistance, and the status of the controller's circuitry. If the self-test fails, the AED will issue a visual (indicator light) and audible (beep) alarm, indicating that the battery needs to be replaced or the device needs servicing.
3. "Standby" Life vs. "Useful" Life:
- Standby Life: This refers to the battery's useful life when the AED is not powered on and in use, measured from the date of manufacture. This is typically four years.
- Service Life: This refers to the length of time the battery can operate after being installed in the AED, measured from the first connection. Once the battery is inserted into the AED and activated, its life begins counting down even if it is not used (typically four years or 300 self-tests). - Important: The expiration date on the battery packaging is based on an unused state. Once opened and installed, follow the AED's prompts or self-test cycle.
4. Storage: Spare batteries should be stored in their original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from high temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight.
